Set up AI with your own key

Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok: what it costs and where your key goes.

AI powers summaries, quizzes, flashcards, key takeaways, cleanup, Feed Scout and chat. Everything else works without it.

  1. Get an API key from Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google (Gemini) or xAI (Grok).
  2. In RapidReader, open Integrations → Cloud Providers, paste the key and save.
  3. Pick a default model for that provider, and your preferred provider.

What it costs

You pay the provider directly for what you use; RapidReader charges nothing. Before you send a chat message, the line under the box shows what it will send and roughly what it will cost, and RapidReader keeps a running total.

Where your key goes

Your key stays on your computer, in the browser’s storage for the extension, and, if you use a folder, encrypted in that folder. Requests go straight from your browser to the provider. Nothing passes through us. See the privacy policy.

Errors

  • Invalid key: check the key in Integrations, and that your account with the provider has credit.
  • “Will not be sent”: the conversation and its background are too big for that model. See Chat with a book or long document.
